چکیده

The effects of aqueous solutions were evaluated on the properties of regenerated cellulosic nanofibers prepared from pure cellulose fibers in various formulations of aqueous solutions. Thermoplastic composites were prepared with reinforcement of the regenerated cellulosic nanofibers. The regenerated cellulosic fibers from cellulosic woody biomass were obtained from dissolved cellulose solutions by coagulating with sulfuric acid and water for phase separation. The properties of the regenerated cellulosic fibers were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy, and tensile testing. The TGA, WAXRD, and FTIR spectra indicated that the regenerated nanofibers possessed cellulosic crystal type II. The micrographs of regenerated cellulosic fibers showed a dense composite structure and lower crystallinity than controlled fibers. The tensile strength of regenerated cellulosic fiber-reinforced polymer composites reached 30 MPa, which was 70% higher than the 1 Mississippi Pacific Resins Inc., Starkville, MS, USA 2 Calhoun Research Station, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, Calhoun, LA, USA 3 Southern Research Station, USDA Forest Service, Pineville, Louisiana, USA 4 The Institute for Micromanufacturing, Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, Louisiana, USA 5 School of Renewable Natural Resources, Louisiana State University AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA, USA Corresponding author: Sangyeob Lee, Mississippi Pacific Resins Inc., P. Nanoindentation as a Tool for Understanding Nano-mechanical Properties of Wood Cell Wall and Biocomposites

Cellulose fibers, cell wall fragments and cellulose microfibrils can be used as reinforced materials for biocomposite manufacture. Understanding nano-mechanical properties of those materials will be very useful to show their full theoretical potential. Nanoindentation testing is a technique that determines the mechanical properties of a material in the sub-micron/nano scale. The test involves p...

SWELLING AND DISSOLUTION OF CELLULOSE IN NaOH AQUEOUS SOLVENT SYSTEMS

As a fundamental step towards creating a new class of cellulose engineering materials, the proposed research investigated swelling and dissolution of cellulose in NaOH aqueous solvent systems (NaOH/H2O, NaOH/thiourea/H2O and NaOH/thiourea/urea/H2O). The dependence of swelling and dissolution behavior of cellulose fibers on the quality of the solvent was investigated in detail. For the two cellu...

Non-traditional lightweight polypropylene composites reinforced with milkweed floss

Lightweight composites are preferred for automotive applications due to the weight restrictions and also due to the presence of inherent voids that can enhance the sound absorption of these composites. The density of the reinforcing materials plays a crucial role in such lightweight composites. Milkweed is a unique natural cellulose fiber that has a completely hollow center and low density (0.9...

Stiffness Prediction of Beech Wood Flour Polypropylene Composite by using Proper Fiber Orientation Distribution Function

One of the most famous methods to predict the stiffness of short fiber composites is micromechanical modeling. In this study, a Representative Volume Element (RVE) of a beech wood flour natural composite has been designed and the orientation averaging approach has been utilized to predict its stiffness tensor. The novelty of this work is in finding the proper fiber orientation distribution func...

Effective Preparation of Bamboo Cellulose Fibers in Quaternary Ammonium/DMSO Solvent

A novel, efficient, and direct blend of solvents, tetrabutylammonium acetate/dimethyl sulfoxide (TBAA/DMSO), was used for the dissolution and regeneration of bamboo pulp. Regenerated fibers were successfully prepared by a wet spinning process. The bamboo pulp without any pretreatment was readily soluble in the solvent under mild conditions. The dissolution process was observed using a confocal ...
